looks like you are off to a good start,you might want to consider lowering your lights closer to the tank.i have the same fixture you do with 250w mh sitting on the tank.

i use the 3/4" on my 75 ,it sticks out about 4". it over hangs in the tank more.

Hi tim ,if you start a gravity system ,and its rigid and air tight ,once the system pulls all the air out of chamber it would stop.Now if you have another port from chamber to sump to level desired,when the level drops in sump the chamber has air gravity feeds until it hits that desired level again.

i bet the water from your lfs is bad ,check your skimmer for scum .
