  1. New Sand...Starting tank over.

420 puff. Should I not go DSB in a smaller tank? I just posted a new topic and asked this question. Your little face suggested I shouldn't...could you give me some pros and cons. Thanks...
  2. DSB in a small tank?

I have a 58 gallon. It has been riddled with problems this past year. Crazy aptaisia, and brutal hair algae. I locked up my sand bed by overzealously dosing alk buffer to raise my ph, to help cure the algae. So I think I'll just start over. I don't have a very good skimmer...just a bakpak...
  3. New Sand...Starting tank over.

Moneypitt. I was dosing my tank with alk buffer and the sand became like stone! I did my best to break it up...but I'm sure the sand under my rock is still locked up and so I figured I'd just redo it! The alge took off big time on the sand once it was locked up...I'm guessing it screwed up...
  4. New Sand...Starting tank over.

By overzealously buffing my tank I have locked up my sandbed. So I'm going out tommorow to buy new sand. Which type is the best? I'm thinking dsb in a 58 oceanic.I heard that Seaflor special grade sand for plenum type nitrate reducing is good. I used to have sugar sand but that stuff was a...
  5. Weird, Weird, Weird

Thanks guys, I have heard that adding vinegar to the Kalk drip helps. Would you suggest a teaspoon for 2gallons of kalk? Also, I have two 802 powerheads in my 58 gallon, seems to be plenty of current...so I don't think the current is the problem. I use a dionizer for my top up and water...
  6. Weird, Weird, Weird

My tank is full of hair algae. I have been dripping kalk now for over two months, and am buffing my alk in order to help rid this algae mess. Every time my alk gets above 10 kh, (5.6DKH)a film of white calcium carbonate(it seems) gets incrusted on the heater and the glace near the...
  7. Abiotic Precipitation of Calcium Carbonate

    Thanks for the links.
  8. Abiotic Precipitation of Calcium Carbonate

I have a 58 gallon oceanic. Live rock. And a whack load of hair Algae. My alk is ridiculously low at about 4.5 kh. I have been dosing kalkwasser now for two months...about 4gallons a week. But nothing seems to raise my alk or calcium. I introduced some alk/ph buffer and that raised it a...
  9. Is this a good idea?

YOU CAN NOT DUMP KALK into your tank. It must be dripped. I tried this once when I was less experienced a year or so ago and It killed my green star polyps...and this was only about 4 litres of kalk into a 58 gallon oceanic. I use one of those 4 litre juice dispensers for kalk...have a 2 foot...
  10. Kalkwasser

Okay...I've heard several different ideas as to how long you should let your kalk sit before dripping. Is it two minutes or 10 hours...any consensus here? Thanks.
  11. aiptasia question

I had close to two hundred of them so I picked up a product called STOP aiptaisia...it killed the big ones but there is always small ones you can't get at. The stop polluted my tank and now I have a huge hair algae problem. I bought three peppermints and they took care of them in about three...
  12. CPR BAKPAK air stone mod?

I would be careful with trying to upgrade the bakpak. You'll cause excess bubbles to get into your tank from the increase volume of bubbles...which can annoy/irritate corals. Why are you wanting to do this...do you have algae problems? Is your water murky? Or are you just trying to have...
  13. Cleaning Skimmers

How often should I clean my back-pak skimmer? I usually clean the collection cup twice a week. But the actually skimmer itself is awkward to clean...so I usually leave it for months at a time.
  14. No Polyp extension

What's your calcium level at? Do you have a Calcium reactor. Sometimes lack of extension on polyps is from low calcium. Usually Kalkwasser dripping isn't enough. IMHO
  15. My heart is brocken, Aiptasia!!!!

I'm with Podman, first of all you have to relax bud. Aiptasia aren't the end of the world. All good aquarists get them from time to time. I have a couple in my tank that show up from time to time, and everytime they show up I simply go over to my friends who borrowed my aiptasia...
