somehow I find it hard to believe that it is real ocean water.
Try this. fill a gallon of water from the ocean, cap it and let it sit for a few days.....open it and give it a smell.

That is why they filter the water....its also not water from a harbor, or inlet....they go out far to collect it.

Oh well I guess I should sell everything and get out of the hobby. Maybe I could take up knitting. Anyone know any good knitting forums?

Hey Nikki,

I have been successfully using the Petco Nutri-Sea water for over a year now. I have a six gallon reef stocked as can be, and everything is flourishing. I have had NO problems with this water, and all the parameters have been good for me right out of the box.
It did not make financial sense for me to buy a RO/DI unit when I am only doing a 1.25 gallon water change a week. My SI buddies supplied me with RO/DI top off water, and a gallon lasted me a month.

Once I upgrade, I will be purchasing an RO/DI unit and making my own water, but for now, this suits my needs perfectly.

Nikki I have used the Petco water for years and I have never had a problem with the water use whatsoever.

Ok now onto a for sale thread and to find a knitting forum.

Chief,
The guy who runs blue zoo aquatics in CA used to run Catalina. They provide water some of the largest aquariums and Casino tanks.

I have been keeping very expensive and unhardy wild caught clownfish in this water with 90 percent survival. I have lost 2 fish out of the 12 clowns i have had since i started using it. Both of those fish showed up on deaths door step.

I have kept anemones alive that are hard to keep and even have been able to recover bleached ones.

This water is better then any salt mix you can buy, weather its economical for some of us that is questionable. In my case im supporting a friend with a product i know is garunteed to work.

i do 5 gallon water changes once a week or one ten gallon every two. Either way it cost me 46 dollars a month. I also warm it up and aerate before use.

RC I have used it from about 6 months before my join date here at MR and still use it to this point, but as posted I am lazy and have no business being in the hobby due to this fact so now I am looking up knitting.

Knit one, pearl two, knit one pearl two...................................

If petco did not change the supplier, Cataliner water is good. Many Californian wholesalers use their water. If their water is bad, I am sure we don't have much of any life stock to offer.

Beside the salinity is not same as our preferred levels for reef, I do see a problem with this water. That means, you should not dump this water into your current set up if you have been using std salt mix unless you adjusted the parameters. That's the same as any salt mix water, right?

In fact, the success rate of tank bred fish are much better with this water than artificial ones. I contribute that to toxins found in the salt mix. This ocean water seems to be less toxic to larvae. My partners in tank bred business is going to hate me for telling you guys that. LOL.

That doesn't make it safe Lol..

That being said, A co-worker uses it regularly for his 12 gallon and it seems to be just fine.

Why filtering water does not make it safe? In commercial setup, even ick can be filtered out.

There may be still some toxins left but it far less than artificial salt mix that are introduced during processing. There were couple studies about the ocean water vs artifical salt mix including the Advanced Aquarist that you can find info. of. This water is processed and I will not doubt their safety.
