Ben there's 100 or so pounds of aragonite in there. Which does not look much. You can just make it out if you look carefully  I will put more in there when funds allow it's quite shallow  Plus thats where the cleaner crew is going. Any uneaten food will settle in there which goes over the weirs.

I'm steadily becoming a fan of the Picassos. Saw a lot of them snorkelling on holiday in September, from the very small to the fully grown. Very good looking (if slightly bizarre) fish.

Love the blue on that acro too. 8O

Very nice, and now I've cottoned on to why the acro is such a vivid shade of blue.

I'm slow, but I get there eventually...

I've got a question

The large sump, that is just extra water volume right? You have nothing going on there except water going in and running into the second tank right?

So, my question is, what keeps all sorts of junk that falls down the overflows from staying in the bottom of that tank?

Sweet setup by the way, I have been a fan of your other setup for quite a while now.

That is what i hope will happen, there is alarge amount of aragonite sand and live rock rubble in there with quite a large clean up crew. These will take care of any uneaten food or detritus which enters and settles in there.
Plus the Genx mak4 sump return is now removed, and has been replaced with a large sequence pump. I was not getting the turnover which i was happy with.

Ahh, I missed the part about there being anything but water in that tank.

How much did that tank run you?

I can just see my wife's eyes as I try to drag one of those puppies down to the basement for a sump for my 55 gallon tank

hi GT,

Merry Christmas!... what skimmer do yu have in mind for that monster rig you got?

I noticed the acropora plasticus :D ... is this the only species you are gonna keep?

I was also gonna point you toward the DIY thread i generated about the sequence needle wheel... thought you might find it handy with another larger skimmer you are prolly ordering..

Ben i have altered a few things 0f lately. Last week i had a near complete wipe out with my 55 gal sump cracking, and um dropping all the water over my basement floor. :cry: The heaters are all titanium apart from one which is a plastic covered affair which decided to melt and release god knows what into the water column killing everything other than 2 triggers and a few damsels. Totally gutted :evil: The cause i hear you ask, well the only thing i can put my finger on is this;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

2 days before this happened i got a new sequence barracuda return pump wowwwwwwwwwwwww what a pump. It is silent but the added stresses caused the end panel (were the pump goes through a bulkhead) cracked. Once the water level dropped the heaters were all exposed with the plastic covered heater then melted. I did a huge water change and ran large amounts of carbon, this sorted the problem out but certainly was not very nice especially being so close to crissy
So an update tank is stocked again, plastic heater thrown as far as i could into the snow in the garden(little temper) i'll find it in the spring  The 55 gal was repaired for the time being, plus i have a larger replacement coming hopefully before the new year

As to the skimmer Ben it really is great, but it is not rated for a fish only system beyond 750 gals and i plan on this being a heavily stocked tank. The new skimmer is'nt really decided upon yet, possibly a turboflotor 5000 twin like on my tank back in wales. there are many available but not all fit my crissy budget  I will keep you informed. And a merry christmas to you and the family Ben

Garry:

What are your ultimate plans for this system? Is it all going to be a fish only system or are you going to plug in a coral tank later on down the road? Somehow I see a 700g+ reef tank being attached at some point down the road. Reefers don't die out so easily.
