I just randomly picked a bunch of fish from liveaquaria.com and put together the following order:

1 eibli angel
3 dispar anthias
1 large powder blue tang
5 green chromis

Total charge $244.90 with a 14 day guarantee

From me, the same order would be $127.50, with a live arrival only guarantee.

Yes, you get a much better guarantee from Liveaquaria, but you PAY FOR IT!

It is unfair and unreasonable to say I want live aquaria's guarantee with nyaquatic pricing. AS I TELL ANYONE THAT ASKS, I, UNLIKE LIVEAQUARIA, DO NOT BUILD THAT INTO MY PRICING.

Now, I'm sure if you look around liveaquaria.com, you can find 1 or 2 items that their pricing is not dramatically less. I guarantee, that if you look at the big picture, the fish I picked are more representative.

Until my customers are willing to pay dramatically more for their fish, I'll stick with my quality/price/guarantee combination.
I do appreciate your pricing mechanism, and now understand your position much better, :) . Thanks for being forth wright in the post above.

I think part of the problem seems that everyone is getting caught up in these fairy type wrasse, I guess the new Acan? :scratchch

Not only do they jump but they're aren't always the most hardiest fish around. Most are shy, spook easy, don't eat right away and some don't like the heavy lights that we're put them under, not to mention we're mixing them with other wrasses. This is leading to a lot of deaths and couple with the high price that some of these wrasse go for, which can goes into the100's of $$$, can cause problems like this to happen.

People need to be made aware that something like this can happen, specially with the price tag on some of these fish. But the person that is spending that much, for one single item, should also do research before hand and the vendor should also make the buyer aware of what can happen.

I can vouch for Mikes honesty. He is also correct he is probably too honest sometimes.

So lets not continue to go along this line of reasoning please!

im glad ur all having fun debating the dos and donts of exotic fish....im out $120 with nothing but lies and smoke screens to show for it as he pleasantly agrees with u all...

We are all out a lot more than $120. Comes with the territory (not that it makes it easier). It is tough to drop the dough and not know what is going to happen.

I am sure if you guys have another talk and meet half way, you both will be better off. Forget about the heated responses and wipe the slate clean.

I know Michael Stern and from what I have read in your posts (besides the beggining of this thread) in the past you seem like a great guy too.

This is me speaking as a brett, not as a mod.

The facts as we know them so far:

Mike, you checked out the fish in person. You picked it out and bought it. You took it home, it eventually died, for whatever reason. We the readers of this thread haven't heard why it's dead. Did it jump? did one of your other wrasses bully it? was it sick with a parasite that you couldn't see? We don't know. All we know is your fish died. You contacted the vendor who offered a decent deal to get you another one. Sure, it's an expensive fish. But that's the chance you take. If you lost a $4 chromis would you have started this thread?

You bought the fish knowing there was no written replacement guarantee. Just like most brick and mortar stores around here, there's ZERO replacement on saltwater fish. And you choose to get the fish from Michael because you can see before you buy, you get a really good deal, and you're supporting the vendors of the site. Any of these reasons and more are why we like local vendors.

He made you an offer to get you another fish. He would have made $0 on the deal. You would have gotten a fish at HIS cost. Granted. Paying over $100 for a fish and having it die sucks. But that's part of this hobby. It's part of taking care of a tank. Things do die. Every time something dies in my tank I figure out why. I also don't BLAME someone else for what goes on in my tank. Without a full autopsy on your fish we can't tell why it died. It's not your fault, it's not his fault. We can't prove he sold you a sick fish, we can't prove that your husbandry killed the fish. We also know that you have other wrasses in your care that are doing well. We know that Michael has sold other fish from the same batch that are doing well.

So instead of pointing fingers, maybe we should drop this thread before it gets locked.

Mike (slamma) you know I like you and have your back. But when someone offers to make $0 on TWO fish he should have profited on, that's a GREAT deal. Granted, maybe paying that extra made that fish 'not worth it' Maybe that extra cash would have broken the budget. thre are many times in the past that I skipped dinner to get something for my tank. It happens. we're ALL addicted to this EXPENSIVE hobby. But there's also times you get a really good deal on something. Its an ebb and flow that happens.

AS A MOD:

there's a lot of good points in this thread. if we continue those choice discussions I don't think this thread will get closed. There's a very active thead in the admin forum discussing this thread. We're all watching.

They also have their customers post "atta-boy" threads. Their feed back should be in the feedback section like the rest of us. Not made into threads screaming "HEY! LOOK AT ME!!!"
Vendor rules have been bent to suit 2 people. Vendors should not be moderators.

I've been staying out of this conversation because it has been a fairly healthy conversation on a topic that is important to us all. But Chris brought up a couple of good points.

I agree about the feedback, feedback for vendors should be kept in the feedback section. However there needs to be some sort of room for people to post photos of the cool stuff they got from a vendor.

The vast majority of this hobby comes with the warning "buyer beware". If you have a problem with a vendor, use the feedback system.

Vendor signatures are completely out of control. I have been paying attention to this and watched them get bigger and bigger. We will have an agreed upon rule soon to limit the size of the vendor signatures (and regular users for that matter). No argument here.

Having a moderator who is a vendor is not a bad thing. It is important to fully represent the interests and needs of this group. If a vendor-mod makes a suggestion, it is not just so they can gain something on the competition, it is a suggestion that is applicable for all vendors. We treat all vendors equally. If you feel otherwise please take it up with me via PM.

Just my thoughts on these topics...

forgive and forget

i feel that that it is unjust that a vendor 's reputation has been tarnished in a public forum. I'm certain that we have all dealt with people and been the victims of suboptimal dealings in the past. To tarnish someone in a public forum over $120 seems harsh to me. We are talking about a fish! The integrity, motives and honesty of two people is being questioned over a fish. Hope i'm not offending anybody, but it is important to put things in perspective and go on with the things that matter like friends and family.

WOW just finished reading all 12 paages of this thread

Well EVERYTHING here said basically is correct in its own way. Slama you know how to take care of yourlivestock
Stern has great prices and stands behind is policies he has stated and in other cases has gone beyond them to make his customers happy. I have orderd from Mike before so I have experience with him. And im very happy with using him. Slama I know just from the thread but from what I know about him is always here to help any1 in need. Both to me GREAT GUYS. Slama from what has been posted it seems Mike has tried to make good by you but you want more (which is how you feel not saying your wrong) This thread i feel is not gettin any1 anywhere and really seemed like a waste. every1 I talked to about slama says hes a good guy. every1 I talked to about stern says the same. So apparently there both good people. To me all the vendors on here have been good people. And like Stern said he can offer a better guarentee but it would cost us more. Something like this JMHO is like I say about everything in life you get what you pay for. If you want that satisfaction of this fish living buy it @ live aquaria then for the quarentee. but if you want to save the money on it by it else where for cheaper. again JMHO and Slama dont take this the wrong way im not taking any1 side here just voicing my opinion

Cant we all just get along lol

;)
