A school of tangs would look nice. Shole tangs? Maybe some of the harder tangs would be good - achilles, powder blues?

Anthais - you could get several different species that mix it up in the wild in there. Mix that with some SPS and you would have a very nice system.

Enough people have given you already good advice. I'm not sure I'm helping any.

Best of luck to you. From what I can see so far, you will have a very pretty tank. Contrats.

If i were fortunate enough to have such a tank...I would put a school of Powder Blue tangs in it. They are my favorite and would love to see 7-9 of them in a huge tank. I can dream though....beautiful tank!

Howdy,

Wooooh! I can see from your pictures who the tank cleaner is going to be (Honey, come here and put this snorkel and mask on and scrape the glass for Daddy
icon_biggrin.gif

Seriously, incredible tank. Did the increasing electricity costs worry you at all? I know the San Diego area had been really hard, triple and quadruple the rates
icon_eek.gif

Also curious, what calcium reactor are you using? I can see what lookes like one behind the ETSS skimmer in your equipment picture, but can't make out the make or model.

Anthias, a school of pink anthias moving throughout your tank would be incredible.

Oh, did Scripps charge you for that much water. I know they don't charge for smaller amounts (or they didn't the last time I checked), but I would be amazed if they didn't charge for that amount.

Good luck,

Scott.

I say for fish stocking you should do a "tang rescue mission". I'm sure locally and even via NDA shipping allot of reefers would be willing to remove the overgrown tangs from thier 55 gallon tanks and donate them to yours.

IMO, you could really put as many and any specias of tank in that thing (within reason, a 40 member school might stretch it).

Scott,
The spigot at Scripps is free and open to the public - it doesn't matter whether you take one gallon or one thousand. I've had the misfortune of showing up on mornings when some of the local restaurants have their trucks out there and they are literally filling up a couple of thousand gallons - and you're in line for your 50 or so - ouch!

Everybody,
If you notice, Arnon was asking what not to keep in the tank so that he can set parameters to work within. I think he realizes (or should) that he can keep the tangs, anthias, etc that have been suggested. I guess he won't have an octopus to go in that tank.

I saw a Whale Shark on Discovery the other night. BR - even though they are beautiful fish and I know you want one, keep them in the ocean where they belong

Hey Arnon,

Just looking for an update on the tank! It's been over 3 months since the original post and setup of the tank. I would expect that it has been filled and has cycled by now?

Lets see some more current photos!

OK, OK

Here is an update.
The tank is running and so is my electric bill.
It has 1 purple tang 1 black tang, 3 blemmies, they are all doing an excelent job cleaning the tank. I've also some cleaners and fire shrimps, some stars and get this, a clam. The big thing in the middle is a derasa clam.

So far its doing great, the water parameters are good.

The only bad part is that as of yesterday I found some traces of bubble algea.

Any ideas on how to get rid of it ?
(No i'm not getting in to pick it up)

The website is on development now as you know by now. Here is the start.

Green Mithrax crabs will eat valonia (bubble algae) but they have been known to nip at the occasional coral and will totally munch any macro-algae. In your tank it would be next to impossible to get the thing out once he is in. I don't know of anything else that will eat the valonia.

Many people have had them without problems. I had several in my 55G tank and they LOVE the bubble algae. I thought that mine were picking at the soft corals in the tank, but after I removed them the picking continued.

Cool thing is that they stay quite visible, and once the valonia is gone it usually stays gone even if the mithrax crabs are removed. BTW- they cost about $3-5 each, too.

Arnon,

I have one emerald, and it seems to eat only some of the Valona. It doesn't target the stuff. Mine will eat one colony, and leave an adjacent one alone.

Another solution the problem would be a sailfin tang, perferably the beautiful Red Sea variety). They grow to be about 12", so most people don't recommend them as a solution. You wouldn't have a problem with size (in fact it would be a nice show stopper in your tank), but your other tangs may not accept it, even though there is room aplenty.

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to tell the difference between the red sea one and not the red sea ?

Arnon,

the species name does not correlate with the picture. The true name is Z.desjardinii. Z. veliferum is the more common species. There appears to be coloration differences between Maldives and Red Sea sailfins. The Red Sea variety is the only one I one I know of that will eat Valonia. The others I am unsure. Check out www.ffexpress.com. They have pics and prices of the different subspecies.
