Geez vitz...you wrote a novel!

IMO the word "Shark" is the problem here. In general sharks are large animals that need a lot of space to swim and have specialized diets, and prone to some diseases. Well...isn't that the same thing as 100 more species of animals regularly kept in aquariums? What about large angels? They need a lot of room to swim, specialized diets and are prone to diseases. BUT since many people have kept them more information is known about Angels and people don't look at them as "out of the ordinary."

Sharks on the other hand don't have a lot of information available about them. I researched for two months! That is a lot of research! I though I found the one with the most information available (through Scotts book and a few websites with information on them, and posts by keepers). All the information I found stated these sharks are hardy and the best shark to keep out of all the species (I'm not saying it was wrong or right). To use this experience of mine to justify not keeping sharks is kind of odd IMO. Many tangs will die from ich in peoples tanks today. But that doesn't mean that a tang is a hard fish to keep and we should stop keeping them. Many Angels will die from fin rot, but that doesn't mean that an Angel can't be kept successfully. Just because one animal died doesn't mean much. There could have been a lot of variables involved in the death of my shark. Maybe it was from a bacterial infection, maybe ich, maybe cyanide, maybe bad food, the list goes on. Those things could happen to a Damsel. We could be having this same discussion on a Maroon clown that died.

I'm not sure if I will ever keep a shark again. I don't know enough about them I guess. I don't want to have this same damn fight every time I have a question about a shark. Say my shark wasn't eating for a week, I come here asking for help and people will say "don't keep sharks", your tank is too small...then a battle warps into other things...and I will have to write 3 pages essays explaining how much I researched before buying a shark.

Instead of a shark I'm thinking of investing $14 grand into solar panels for my house so I can buy MH's and not have to worry about Gray Davis's bullshit electric problems... :? :D My last months bill was $350!!!

i have been watching this thread since post one and i am another with no desire to flame anyone....but

Jason,
did you expect a different response? you have been on this board for some time now. did you think you could disagree with the advice that was given to you, of which you asked for, and then return for explanations without involving the past discussion when you decided against the landslide majority?
i am no tang cop. i realize that the requirements of the few fish that fair well in our systems wouldn't be doing so if we hadn't failed in their husbandry more than a few times, but you made a bad decision. i have done it myself, more times than i care to admit. so lets agree to that poor decision.

the problem isn't with this board.
this board is the best i have found because the members don't lie to themselves or to one another when it comes to issues like this. it doesn't matter who may have posted your threads and purchased that shark, if they went against the overwhelming advice against the purchase, they sure as hell shouldn't be gettin' upset when they are confronted with the proof of thier own decisions.

i am a member at quite a few other boards and there is often a hush when enviro-concerns are brought up. they seem to only care for a pretty tank regardless of the cost.
i find it appalling, as i believe you do, to trap creatures in a doom ridden box to await death so we can have a neat thing in the corner.

this board rocks! they try to keep these things from happenin' :D

i hope i haven't offended you and if i have, i apologize, for that certainly wasn't the goal.

as far as the topic at hand goes... i haven't kept a shark.... guess that makes me a no-count.

Help!!!! And please don't jump on me about this....please.or I will cry.. Ok! I was drying off my Great White after given him a Fresh Water Bath when he suddenly stopped breathin. I immediately started mouth to mouth breathin and started compression on his chest. Hey he tasted pretty good. I like salty stuff. I was wonderin how many compressions should I do between each breat I give him! Like I said I don't know crap about sharks. Can't find much info either......come on! Help!.......hey!.... I got to go and work on him some more. I called 911 but they said they are not shark experts either. Hey....Seamaiden.do you think you could fly out here tonight and help me with this? You should know what to do. Do you think I should put him back in his tank? I can't give him CPR if I do that. I can't fit in that bucket.

Bang, I can't do a damn thing if I'm laughing my ass off. Look! You left your lipstick all OVER the shark, that's what's killing him. Fer Chrissakes. And didn't I tell you to stop powdering him after his bath? SHEESH!

How many of you "experts" that have posted a comment on Jason's shark have ever kept this species?

Well, I've personally kept the closely related white-spotted bamboo shark. I even posted a picture in this thread. In fact, mine was captive-bred or I wouldn't have kept it at all. I also have experience with the brown-banded bamboo through relationships at public aquariums and some local pet stores.

BTW, keeping your shark one year does not qualify you as an expert either. You don't realize their size, power, and requirements for SPACE until you've experienced and cared for adult bamboo sharks. A 170 or 190 gallon aquarium is not a suitable habitat for an adult bamboo shark. Go to a public aquarium and watch them; perhaps feed them and then tell me they can live happily in a 6 by 2 foot box. Tangs, OTOH.... :D

GScheimer: I never claimed I was an expert. All I claimed was I was the only person who has posted anything (on this thread) that has kept this species. Also, I think I have a little better understanding of the "power" of a little 3 foot bamboo shark. In addition to reefing, I am also a offshore sport fisherman who has landed much bigger sharks than 3 feet (Now you bleeding hearts must really think I am the devil if I go fishing!!!) So instead of just looking at them through the glass of a public aquarium, I DO KNOW how powerful they are. And to answer your question, yes they can live happily in a 190 tank (like Jason's) These are not pelagic sharks that need lots of space. They are benthic, lethargic (sp?), lazy fish that really don't do much to begin with.

Okay, you guys wanna say that 1 year isn't a success, fine. My shark is still alive and healthy, that is the point I am trying to make.

And finally two requests:
When you quote me in a post, don't take me out of context.
And how do you do that? I want to quote some of you guys but can't figure out how to do it.

I know how to do it, but I'm not telling. And I fish.

fishguy, you really don't have any idea who you're arguing with here, do you? Does the expertise found in public aquariums really mean nothing to you? It sounds to me as though Mr. Scheimer has experience very similar to mine, he's in agreement with me, we've both seen this done so successfully that, apparently, we are both associated with organizations that put animals BACK into the wild, not just the fish store.

In my humble opinion, that is where expertise is to be found.

Bangbang make another funny comment SM and Sj are trying to get this thread all heavy and depressing again!!!!

FWIW Jason so so sorry about your shark. When I saw that picture it kind of got to me and that's one reason I wouldn't even take the chance on such a magnificent animal. I think fairly highly of my husbandry (animal) skills but I have resisted the temptation to 'save' many magnificent animals from LFS for the same reason, I'd be crushed to have it die on me and it would only encourage people that treat animals like commodities (most LFS). My goal in keeping a reef is not totally altruistic but the best thing I can say is people come over to look at my tanks and their jaws drop and that look of wonder comes across their face. That's when I explain to them how precious life is and how !@#!@ed up the current state of the worlds fishersies, oceans and coral reefs are. Education is the key and sparking that sense of wonder that hopefully keeps so many of us in the hobby is the only way it will continue and we can convince people that reefs are a resource we MUST save.

/soapbox off sorry

 This whole thing is funny. If you buy something and it dies... so what you paid for it. Its your choice to learn from it or throw some more money away. The same rights that let me buy a fish let Joe Bob buy the same fish nine times to keep it once. What if you bought a live puffer fish and ate it 4 fugu? Who cares I bought it and I like fresh fugu( yeah I know its poisonous). If you want to protect fish, dont buy anything for a sw tank, get a hamster or something. Sure it is great to try to make an informed purchase so you dont waste any money or kill stuff for no reason. However, if you do its ok they sell more if you want to try again or if your just hungry!!!

Umm ok.

OT Question Fish Guy, I have a couple of friends from Norman, they tell me it has the highest unsolved murder rate in the country? Is that true or maybe it was Lawton?

Regardless I still think looking at animals as disposable commodities will kill this hobby by way of gov't legislation here in the next decade if not sooner.

So do they have candy stripe nurse sharks at this pool hall Bangbang?

Thankyou Seamaiden......I will help the Nurse Shark escape today at the Pool Hall. Ok...I had to do some quick research. It seems that Great Whites acan have anything from 2- 14 pups. Cool .........they call em all pups. Well my pups seem to be reactin differently depending on what room I am rockin them in. Had to rockem to save them from usin to much energy. I am given them a high protien diet and a few license plates to eat as a mineral supplement.(I really broke a sweat breakin those plates up in micobits so I could put it in their bottles. Ok back to their behavior in each room.it is real strange.they suck harder and cry less in one room than another. Well.I found out that there is a .000000000125 millivolt difference in electrical activity in each room. My question is.....what do they do best with? Hey..I got to go and put on some coffee. This is goin to be a very long night. Oh My god! Do you think the paint on those plates will hurt them! I am callin the Poison Center now!

Savetheexpos: All I asked is don't is don't quote me out of context. My actual quote was "You guys think I am the devil." Just like liberals to quote out of context. And I don't think that is "Nuff said" cause I don't even know the point you are tryin to make. I am not sure you know the point you are trying to make.

I guess you have to have the words "fishguy" in your name to make sense.
