alright

since podman started this thread, I think he should finalize any "rules" he may want (based on how people have responded in the thread). And just set a start date.

My impression is that most of the people who want to participate don't really care about the rules and will have entries for this contest regardless of rules. But I definitely think that having gallon limit would be a good guiding hand.

No pressure podman!

well we need to have Len's input and i believe he may be gone for the weekend... i may be wrong but something he said downstairs leads me to believe that.

i don't think we can go deciding upon the rules until we know the specifics that he has mind.

what does everyone think about putting a vote on the contest guidelines?

for instance we could take a poll regarding the tank maximum.

Go ahead and start some polls on how you guys want to do things. I'd suggest keeping the tank no larger than 10 gal so a lot of people can participate if they want. Len will be back ~Sun-Mon and can give his $0.02 when he gets back.

This idea has a lot of interesting stuff that could come out of it. I'm definitely interested in seeing how this will progress. :)

Although I like the idea of price limits, I'd hate to be left out because I have almost everything I need to start a tank lying around. How about a price limit on equipment but not on livestock? Say $500.00?

I would like to see some "other" rules implemented. Such as,
start date ie: like March 1 or April 1, gives folks time to assemble nessecary components.

Day one: tank set up with water, sand, rock, circulation powerhead/filtration and lighting. The only thing that can be upgraded after set up is lighting.

Min. cycle time without the use of damsels or other livestock. Like a min. of 4-6 weeks before the addition of live stock. May as well use this as a learning/teaching tool.

Max. lighting, say nothing more than 70watt mh with whatever supplemental you choose.

Pictures are a requirement on a weekly, bi-weekly basis. Or something like that, with a requirement that the forum must be notified of things like vacations/business trips in advance or in the case of family emerengcys asap.

What do you all think, keeps everything even and fair regardless of equipment or what they have in other tanks to use.

personally a clam will not sway my vote.. i can see past the spendy items.
a good looking reef tank is so much more than expensive livestock.

all right... i think i can shut up now

Clams expensive? Those were the bargain basement "1st grade" ones, not even the ultra or teardrop or black and white maximas :D

'recon it would be a good idea for another forum in the index called like "Annual RDO buildoff"? We could use different threads as a log for people, since most of us are on here everyday anyways. Just make all the participant's threads stickies in the forum. If people have questions about something they can post them.

Me likes this idea. I won't be particpating this go around, but this seems like a good/easy way to administrate this thing. If you have a dozen people posting in the same thread about all of their different tanks, it will get very confusing. This way we can see each tank develop on its own and understand its development. At the end of the contest, any winners tanks can be left as a sticky until the next contest so that new people can see them and learn how other people setup 'nice' tanks. The other nice thing is that this contest could end up with a lot of discussion threads which could crowd the GRD.

Just my $.02.

whats the difference between this and TOM ? how is one going to tell if the tank was set up for this build off a has been a long time up and running system? It would be best to keep it to bragging rights only, less chance of less than honest entires showing up just to claim a prize.
I saw how well the so called salt study is/ins't prgressing. bitten once twice shy I'll pass on this one.

A non-participating mod could come up with a 6 digit number each week. This could be proof of the date if it's included next to each weekly picture of the tank progress. With weekly progress photographs it would be awefully difficult to use a currently set up system.

edit - I just noticed how good some of the people here are with photoshop. Oh well....

comon, if they want to cheat that bad...who cares. This is just mainly for fun anyways. If you dont want to do it, then dont do it. Its that simple. It would take an awful lot of work to photoshop weekly pics, and I went to school for it and have been using it non-stop daily since 1998. We arent going to give out like 5000 dollars for first prize or anything. geez.

Yeah, don't expect the prize to be something of trementous monetary value. But most likely something small, but to remind you that you've done a great job.

Of course, you could always sell the whole setup on E-bay.........

This contest will be administered directly by Reefs.org and Reefs.org members. It's got no ties with any outside parties. It's your perogative to pass on this experience, but this will run smoothly. We will have rules in place to ensure honesty, although I trust reefkeepers can be honest on their own.

Final rules are being drafted as we speak. This should be very fun :P
