I think there should be devisions (sp?) that would show us new to the hobbie what it really takes to make this all happen, and how many diffrent things you can do and get a real good tank.

I think that's a great idea. There should definatly be divisions for size, as many people are being encouraged to buy larger tanks to acomidate greater water flow for better tank health.

This guy is a laugh riot.

I set up a 10g a couple weeks ago so that I can grow out some leather frags. Very low $$$.
This is what I will enter?
Will it win.
Doubt it.
Have I tried some innovative DIY on this tank?
Yes.
Will other people learn anything?
Who cares about other people?

Forget about the "rules," just play! May the best man win.
If someone wants to pour a million bucks into a 10g tank, he better take some damn good pictures because I want to see it. I put $50 into mine and it is better than anyone elses, those people suck and should take this as a reason to get out of the hobbie  .

I too think yall are frettin too much over rules-this was designed to be a fun and friendly competition, not a reality TV series.

I don't think this is a who can make the best tank using the same stuff contest. I don't think that is what Podman wanted. Just a go out and start a tank that is around 10 gallons and see how everyone does.

My concern is that if we are going to judge for a prize then the person who can stock their tank with full size frags will have an advantage over someone who stocks their tank with room to grow.

We need something to say hey person A stocked the tank will full size frags. Throughout the time period the system doesn't have much if any growth. However, because they started with something impressive it still looks great. Person B started out with small frags, the tank looked pretty bare, but now after the time period there has been good growth, the tank looks good, it will look great with more time to grow but for now person A wins because of what he started with.

If the judging can take into consideration with what we start with compared to how we end. Or have multiple categories. 1. Best looking, 2. Most improved looking, 3. Most Unique, etc. That would balance things out.

I don't want to be stuck having everything being the same. I don't think we need an exact price, maybe we don't need a price limit.

This has to be a fair game, or it loses the purpose.

either we disagree on what is fair or simply stating that the rules are, "there are no rules", is fair.

the only "rule" i think needs to be made is actually more acurately titled as a definition... we simply need to define what is considered a nano and then all bets are off.. build what you want.

much simpler and much more fun, IMO.
and more fun should not be confused with what is more expensive.. i think taking out the DIY aspect is really destroying my views of a budget.

I've got some spare stuff laying around including a ten gal. My only concern is gonna be lighting for corals. This would be my first launch into corals and I really don't wanna mess things up. So if anyone is willing to help out with advice to the newbies along the way, I'm down with it :)

i am assuming that you meant we do need a price limit.

personally, i would like to put this contest in a mindset that ignores the prize winnings.. whatever they may be and instead focus on the fun part.

and i think.. maybe i am wrong, that a person setting up a reef tank of any size can afford to pack a ten gallon with coral... maybe not SPS or LPS but i could go buy a sarcophyton today for 30 bucks that would nearly fill a ten gallon tank and this could be a very cool tank with a couple clownfish.

also a smaller five gallon would be easy to pack full if that was the look someone thought was the best look. i personally am not a fan of stuffed tanks, they don't look very natural to me.

After thinking about it I do NOT want a price cap. However, it could be cool to see how much a persons tank grows out over the time period.

My biggest concern is gonna be for the welfare of my critters. I don't wanna get this setup and then find that I did something wrong.
I'm a reef newbie, though I've got some SW under my belt now w/1+ years of saltwater (15H, 25H, and 10 gal jellyfish)
I just wanna make sure I get a nice looking setup that is good for what I put in it. I'd hate to kill off anything by not utilizing proper equipment to try and stay under a price limit....

You know this is getting too complicated. Let's keep it simple.

1) NO PRICE LIMIT!

2) Frags are cool; do what you want to YOUR tank and stock it the way you want/how you want.

3) Logs:
a) Logs should be kept of where you got it, how much it was, etc with a final tally so it can be farley judged for skill (plus it will help us newbies learn :D ).
b) A Photo log would be good for tank development.

4) Stand and hoods should not be considered in judgment.

5) Have fun!!!!

How would this be fair to people without capital? Well I say this should be an annual event. A year is enough time to grow out frags and accumulate coral/supplies for those less fortunate. At the end of this time people can break down the tanks, keep them, or start a new one. IF down the road people think that a year is too long for the contest, just say something!
Anything I missed Podman?

 sounds good to this guy

oh, and i think photos are a must.. we do need them for the judging so it shouldn't be too much to ask for some kind of evidence that the tank hasn't been up and running for years.

I think the judges should be require to physically visit each and every tank entered.

I volunteer to be a judge.

Providing a sponsor for the judging can be found.

You may catch flack for your meathods Beaslbob, but you're great and this place wouldn't be the same without ya :D

Funny - I was thinking exactly the same thing about one hour ago.
It's like having a damsel in the tank: makes everything more interesting, although at times you wish you'll take it back to the LFS :).
