Hey Ace! I just read your thread here, and I think your tank is gonna look great. Im planning all the same ideas for my 29G. I think that trash can overflow box will be awesome. Do you have access to a table saw? that would be the best way to cut that box, plus you can use it to cut the teeth in it too. What size bulkheads did you use for your drain?

I think it's a 1.5 in bulkhead but I can't remember. When I get home I'll double check and post it.

OK, one more question. I think the bulkhead I have is a 1". Is there any value to up-sizing the elbow in the overflow box to a 1 1/4"? If not that will save even more space. So if I decide to make an overflow out of glass I was thinking the dimensions would be dxwxh=3" x 5" x 6"

I want the PH in the box as an option for more flow. It will hide the PH from view and look clean. If i dont need the extra flow, I can just plug the bulkhead and let it cover with coraline.
As far as drain bulkhead size, I would think the larger the bulkhead the more flow to your sump. the flow to the sump needs to be matched to the flow of your return pump so you dont pump your sump dry. Im thinking 1 1/4" BH will match well with a Mag 9.5 at 5 feet of vertical head pressure.

The size you said just now sounds like you can get it out of that trashcan.

Well, your trashcan has one dimension of 5 and the other dimensions are way bigger, so cut it down.
I could cut something out of that trashcan that was 3 inches from the side of the tank where the bulkhead is to the front of the overflow, 5 inches wide, and 6 inches deep before you could say fiddlesticks......
