Hey Ace! I just read your thread here, and I think your tank is gonna look great. Im planning all the same ideas for my 29G. I think that trash can overflow box will be awesome. Do you have access to a table saw? that would be the best way to cut that box, plus you can use it to cut the teeth in it too. What size bulkheads did you use for your drain?

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting some water in there and then finally buying some livestock. :)

I don't have a good table saw so I am reluctant to cut it that way. Is the theory to have the smallest overflow box as possible or are there guidelines for the length and depth?

I think it's a 1.5 in bulkhead but I can't remember. When I get home I'll double check and post it.

I dont know if there are specific sizes. I know that the depth of the tooth cut is what regulates how much water enters the overflow box. I saw a calculation to figure that out, but I forget where I saw it. I think the overflow box only needs to be big enough to contain the pumps/plumbing your using. I plan on using a box (probably your trash can) that is only about half the depth of my tank, and cut it deep enough to allow a MJ600 inside it for a small closed loop through a bulkhead in the overflow box.
this is what I was thinking of doing:

OK, one more question. I think the bulkhead I have is a 1". Is there any value to up-sizing the elbow in the overflow box to a 1 1/4"? If not that will save even more space. So if I decide to make an overflow out of glass I was thinking the dimensions would be dxwxh=3" x 5" x 6"

That would be just big enough to house the PVC drain.

I want the PH in the box as an option for more flow. It will hide the PH from view and look clean. If i dont need the extra flow, I can just plug the bulkhead and let it cover with coraline.
As far as drain bulkhead size, I would think the larger the bulkhead the more flow to your sump. the flow to the sump needs to be matched to the flow of your return pump so you dont pump your sump dry. Im thinking 1 1/4" BH will match well with a Mag 9.5 at 5 feet of vertical head pressure.

Unless you up size the whole drain system I really do not see any benifit of just up sizing the elbow.

I kind of figured that. I was thinking maybe it helped noise. Thanks!

those are very nice.. but not as rewarding (or cheap) as DIY!

BTW--What is the JG ball valve on top of the standpipe for on those barr aquatic pipes?

BTW, I'm using a Mag-7 on a Squid as a return from my sump on a 40 gallon system. I'm also using a couple of small powerheads in the tank to beef up circulation. I really like the arraignment - lots of good flow and very few dead spots.

Dammit Ace, quit being a tightwad and ruin that damn trashcan already....

The size you said just now sounds like you can get it out of that trashcan.

Didn't you say 3 by 5 by 6 or something like that?

Well, your trashcan has one dimension of 5 and the other dimensions are way bigger, so cut it down.

I could cut something out of that trashcan that was 3 inches from the side of the tank where the bulkhead is to the front of the overflow, 5 inches wide, and 6 inches deep before you could say fiddlesticks......

Drive on down here, we can make something tomorrow.....

You would probably get it done sooner that way even with the 20 hours or so of driving......

Wazz? Anybody?

OK, here is what I want to do. I have the glass here and the silicone and I'm ready. To save space can I go with just the two baffles for the pump compartment or two? If two which one should I eliminate?

Thanks!

I think I would reverse those so that the water goes under the first, then over the second and then under the third.

At least I think that's the way to do it. Don't quote me though.....
