BTW. That is a 17" heater next to castle rock.. And as you all know. Pics dont do LR justice. Both of those pieces are full of cool caves and holes. We have to keep this one a secret from the wife.
She's aware of the purchase. Just not the outcome. Ya. Right. We'll be talking all to soon.

So the water is in. The system is ready for LR.. BIG PROBLEMS THOUGH.. I bought a mag 2400 for my closed loop and its horribly loud. The impeller chatters like no tomorrow. I have a spare mag 1800 but it just isnt enough. Any Suggestions on a semi quiet high volume pump. I need 2400+ GPH. Its either a Mach5, Reeflow dart, or Little giant.
Help me buy the right pump please. :?

Have you tried closing down the output on the pump to see if that stops the chatter? You also should take the pump apart and inspect all the pieces. They really shouldn't chatter...

Sounds like something is wrong. Perhaps the impeller is broken?

Thanks for the input all.
I did take the pump apart and checked the impeller first thing. I looks fine. The impeller housing on the mags is fairly thin plastic and I wonder if it has the noise buffering capacity I am needing. I havent turned off just the output to try to quiet it down. When they are both off ( when i forget to turn open them after I switch pumps) it is as quiet as can be. At first I thought it was cavitating. I guess that is still an option huh? The mag 18 makes almost the same sounds just alot quieter. I can wrap a couple towels around the impeller and it is fine. I wont be able to do any thing else for two more weeks when I move up to Seattle and start the cycle. Any Input in the mean time will be appreciated and pondered in depth.

I didn't mean to turn off the output completely, just turn it down a bit. That puts some back pressure on the pump which will sometimes stop cavitation. If the pump doesn't quiet down while you are slowly shutting the valve on the output side then its not likely cavitation.

Unless of course your input to the pump is restricted too much. The plumbing to the inlet of the pump should be the same size as the fitting on the pump or bigger.

Thanks Knuck. I will try that in a couple weeks. I sure would like to save the money and still use that pump.

Personally I would write DANNER about the problem. Maybe it is a faulty impeller and they may send a new one. My Mag 18 is silent.

Trido, did you get your noisy-pump problem solved?

No, Im still in California until next week. On Monday the 29th I will Pack up my LR and all of my coral early in the morning. Then the grueling 14 hour drive begins. The tank is running is I type this. I also have a 55 waiting for the coral, The fish will go into hypo salinity QT at that time as well. I wont be able to work out the CL bug until then. At that time I will put my 165lbs. of LR in the tank, finish hanging my lights(220w VHO actinic, 500w 14K MH, and now I also have 196W of PC to use as well), and get my comp. hooked up so I can post all of the pics. I cant sleep I'm sooo excited. I've been waiting for this since last Thanksgiving.

Ok.. Im finally moved in, have internet conection and had some time to take a few pics. For my move. I went againt the advice of a couple trusted people and instead of bagging all of my live stock I used a 800watt power inverter hooked to the battery of my truck. I used two 75w heaters and two air pumps hooked into two 12 gallon rubbermaids. One for corals and one for LR, fish and my anenome. I also had Two 20gallon tubs with 85lbs of LR which was cooking on the front porch. I started packing up livestock at 2A.M. in The Bay area. I was on the road headed for Seattle at 6:30 A.M. (14hr. Drive). In Seattle I had the 120 and a 50 gallon warm and ready to stock upon arrival. By midnight, everything was in its new permanent and temporary home. Not a single loss from the trip. If you have a truck and can handle the saltwater sloshing around in the back. I highly recommend a power inverter for a long move.
(edit) 135 pounds of LR cooking.

After a week and half there was still no Ammonia, nitrite or nitrate so I move my inhabitants into the 120. .Here are some pics of the complete setup.

That looks really good. Nice job transferring the stuff from the Bay to Seattle. Not many people would have gone through with that :D

One more thing, what fish are in there? And you getting a tang now?! Seems like it would be a good additon! IMO, of course. :D

Fish. Hmmm... So far I have one gold banded maroon clown, an orange spot shrimp gobie, and two green chromis. I would like to add another crazy clown (maroon mate) for some reason. Also a Mandarin and the tang is a must. I havent decided on a species yet. Righty mentioned gettin a harem of wrasses that I am very keen on. We'll see. :D
