Did I forget to mention that I always wanted a Moorish Idol! 8O

I don't think I'll ever buy one unless I am fortunate enough to fine someone who has actually kept one alive for a few years and wants to sell it for some odd reason?

Anyone know someone who has an Idol that has outgrown their tank? Hey, it can't hurt to ask ;)

Louey, get a pair of genicanthus angels. Bellus, watanabei, or MASKED swallowtail....NOT Japanese. The masked are MUCH better looking.

I'd also consider a peppermint hogfish or lineatus wrasse.

Also, Randy, Atlantis Aquarium has a male crosshatch trigger for $350. I know I saw a place online that had a PAIR for $350...I'm trying to find the link. Here's the link to Atlantis :

I used to have an 8" crosshatch male...just a stunning fish. Very unique. They're also not as rare as TMC sez, IME.

Also consider a smaller polleni grouper. They don't get as large as other groupers (around 12" max) and they are fantastic in coloration. I used to have a 3-4" one, and he was awesome.

Do you have any small urchins, clams, or brittlestars? This may be a problem if the hog is big. I typically see them for sale at around 3-5" though.

I have a 14" T. Gigas and a 4" T. Deresa. I also have three brittle stars that are 6 years old. I don't really care for the brittle stars, so if they went the way of my shrimps, then oh well.

Will the hog nip the clams? I don't recall ever hearing about any wrasses being hard on clams?

Louey

I doubt it, but not sure. Mine certainly didn't touch a great big T. squamosa I had. My understanding is they eat very small bivalves by crushing the shell. Not big ones.

The aquarium I volunteer at has 3 moorish idols. They are all huge pigs, they'll eat mysis/frozen cubes/flake. If you're willing to wait for a healthy eating individual I suspect you could be successful in a tank your size.

Personally I'd got the easier route and just get a Heniochus sp. :D

I'd be with Chip on the grouper idea, but he'll eat your future mandarins, and the clown you currently have.

I'd ditch the mandarin idea, lose the clown...and do the grouper thing. 8)
Aside from the species that Chip mentioned, you have many other options, mostly in the "hind" or Cephalopholis genus which is were the Polleni resides. However, there are a few "true" groupers available in the Epinephelus genus that will do well in such a tank. My favorite is Epinephelus ongus. An awesome fish that tops out at around 11" or so. You also have E. hexogonatus...a cool fish but hard to find.

Don't do what I did back in the day and put a Queensland grouper in there 8O 8O 8O

As far as the Hinds (Cephalopholis sp.) go, you have minuatus, argus, etc...all very cool fish.

I wrote an article on these guys which you may see soon.

As far as fish compatible with your current species list...and if you want to be a bit "on the edge" I've had great luck keeping Emperor angels in reefs with clams of various sizes. You can just see the edge of a maxima in this pic. :)

I think any grouper would eat my clown, my anthias and my scotts fairy wrasse. Groupers eat anything that fit in there mouths.

I think I'll pass on the goupers. There are plenty of other fish that have been suggested in this thread so far that would be compatible with what I already have.

That's sweet that your able to keep an emperor in your reef tank. I'm afraid to try it.

It's called a whiptail or sea bream. I believe it's P. aureofasciatus. This is one of those cheap fish, that looks cool, is reef safe, peaceful, and doesn't get too big (around 9" IIRC).......yet no one buys them. Go figure. Chip, I'm surprised you haven't seen them before. They're $10 at wholesalers out here.

They're in the family Nemipteridae (sp?) along with the genus Scolopsis. The Waikiki aquarium has a specimen of Scolopsis bilineatain the 5000 g reef tank. Cool fishies!

Nope, have never seen them.

9" is too big for either of my tanks, tho. Too bad. Looks like a great reef fish...

That is a cool looking sea bream. I have never seen one of those before. I think I'd buy one if I did.

Yes, they certainly do. :) Well...if I can't convert your tank into a grouper tank, looks like I'll have to set up another one myself. 8)

They key with imperators is just getting them when they're little.

After thinking about all of the fish that have been suggested in this thread, the following are the fish that I think I will chose for the following:

Sohal tang
Cuban Hogfish
Pair of Marine Betta's
Pair of Genicanthus angels. Haven't decided the exact genincanthus yet.
Crosshatch Triggerfish
That Sea Bream if I could ever find one.

Hell, I may just get all of them. :D

If you're going to get all of them, I'd ditch the cuban hogfish and get a peppermint hogfish.
