Steven, I guess what I said earlier is true after all.

You would rather protect the name than the natural resouce.

Just to placate you for a while.

What would a representative of the government say.

We gave him a lease to setup a hot dog stand on the rim of the Grand Canyon. He broke his lease so we canceled it.

He never owned the land that lease was on. That lease had conditions. When he didn't adhere to those conditions, he broke the lease.

Sara, go find the rest of the documents.

Ok, but, honestly... with all these analogies, now I'm a little confused as to what you want me to be looking for and why.

So, Eric (with help from the government) went to court to get the corals that were issued to him under his permit... and the judge said "ok, Eric, go get them." What does that mean? So what? Apparently the corals were sent back one way or another.

The judge told Eric he had no legal authority to reclaim the corals after his permit was revoked. FKNMS had to send someone to get them.

In their defense... it's not all that easy to speak on contentious topics. My mother is an Italian woman who grew up on the rough side of the Queens, so I have the genes for it, but I can understand forgiving the people who don't.

what's "the Queens" :?:

sorry, that stuff's not genetic. what you're talking about is called Batesian mimicry.

The judge told Eric, that Eric had no legal authority to get the corals back from Reef Savers after his permit was revoked. They were FKNMS property and as such FKNMS would have to come to claim them.

He's not a player... he's just some dude that's been (for whatever reason) trying to get my attention since the RC debacle.

after his permit was revoked

No one can cry sour grapes after the fact. I said that already.

You are just saying that after Eric did all this stuff, after his permit was pulled, he couldn't cooperate with the Feds then. No one cares about that and that was never an issue at all.

It is everything that led up to his permit being pulled that's the problem. The initial permit. The fact that it was impossible to meet the conditions of that permit as it was written.

Eric is just collateral damage.

Start with the certified letter. I would also look into what ultimately became of those corals. It seemed FKNMS recalled the corals for a few reasons. They were uncomfortable with selling the corals to either researchers or the hobby. What I find strange about that, is soon after they get the corals back from Houston, there is some discussion about not selling the corals, giving them to researchers, but charging a service fee and how this service fee could be used to make the coral growing project self-funding. Now, where did I hear this before?

Also, there is some valid concern that the corals are not being cared for properly and to protect them from harm, they recalled them and sent them to Craig Watson. What ends up happening to the corals?

I said the legal proceedings to reclaim the corals from Reef Savers was a sub-plot that I found interesting and that Sara as a law student might as well. I find it interesting that the sanctuary is screaming at Eric to send the corals back but that it is precisely their screaming and demands which preclude him for doing that.

Steven - if you're trying to in any way suggest that the FKNMS only took back the corals so that they could make money off them themselves, that's just absolutely absurd. The FKNMS has all the authority over and access to Florida corals they could need or want for research, they don't need to go surreptitiously taking them from UH students.

Steven, this is just smoke on your part.

Legal sale of the corals is not the problem.

The problem was the initial permit, not meeting the conditions of the permit. Not notifying the permitting agency when those conditions were not met and not showing good faith in maintaining those conditions. Leaving the country for Puerto Rico.

That is where it starts and ends.

Craig runs a certified lab. Arrangements were made for who would hold the permit at that lab. Notice that even though it's a lab, only one person's name will appear on that permit.
Just like Eric, one person is responsible, and only one person. Not an organization.
