i've always attributed the slow season, and the corresponding pickup as the colder weather approaches, to the fact that more people spend less time indoors, and tend to let their tanks get neglected more easily, than when they're indoors more, thereby spending more time actaully watching the tank
christmas is usually the time of year the stores i've worked sell more complete aquarium packages, as well-leading to a typical increase in fish sales during january
reef hobbyists are most likely birds of a different feather-but they don't represent the majority of sales in a full line pet store-they are outnumbered hugely by freshwater clientele (in the stores i've worked in, anyway)(a larger percentage of reefers also shop online, ime, than freshwater hobbyists)
