i've always attributed the slow season, and the corresponding pickup as the colder weather approaches, to the fact that more people spend less time indoors, and tend to let their tanks get neglected more easily, than when they're indoors more, thereby spending more time actaully watching the tank

christmas is usually the time of year the stores i've worked sell more complete aquarium packages, as well-leading to a typical increase in fish sales during january

reef hobbyists are most likely birds of a different feather-but they don't represent the majority of sales in a full line pet store-they are outnumbered hugely by freshwater clientele (in the stores i've worked in, anyway)(a larger percentage of reefers also shop online, ime, than freshwater hobbyists)

Dean Answers Cheney's Barb About His Mother

AP
"I don't care if Dick Cheney likes my mother or not. We are going to fight back," Howard Dean says.

BOSTON (June 21) - Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean, responding to criticism from the vice president, said he doesn't ''care if Dick Cheney likes my mother or not.''

The vice president said in a recent interview that Dean was not the type of person to lead a political party and mentioned the chairman's mother.

''I've never been able to understand his appeal. Maybe his mother loved him, but I've never met anybody who does. He's never won anything, as best I can tell,'' Cheney said in an interview on Fox News Channel's ''Hannity & Colmes.''

Dean was elected governor of Vermont five times between 1992 and 2000. He ran for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination but closed down his campaign after stumbling in the early primaries.

Dean has recently described the GOP as ''pretty much a white, Christian party'' and said many Republicans have ''never made an honest living.'' Republican leaders have called on him to apologize, and even some Democrats have distanced themselves from his remarks.

Dean, in Boston on Monday for a fundraiser, told fellow Democrats that Republicans want a smaller government, but ''their government is just big enough to fit inside Terri Schiavo's bed in the nursing home. We can do better than that.''

Earlier this year, Dean, a physician, accused congressional Republicans of grandstanding in trying to keep the brain-damaged woman alive and said Democrats will use that against them in coming elections.

The party chairman also said on Monday that Democrats can win in traditionally Republican states.

''But we gotta be there and fight in order to do it. And believe me, we are going to fight back. I don't care if Dick Cheney likes my mother or not. We are going to fight back,'' Dean said to cheers and applause. ''I think it's great that Dick Cheney went after me, to be honest. At least they notice there's a Democratic Party that's not going to put up with this stuff any more. So there's a lot we're gonna do.

So?
Whats wrong with acting like the leaders of the country?????????
ARE WE SOMEHOW TO BE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD?
Who ever wants to play school monitor and tell people to behave....just attack them and watch the fur fly.
Its normal and natural and the best way to stay above it all is to care for nothing, do nothing, believe in nothing...and keep your room clean and neat.

I for one have zero interest in wether Kalk and Mike acty like the leader of the Democratic party and the Vice president of the land...I'm purely interested in what they have to say and now feel cheated that the dialogue has to stop.

Both a blanket satement about "slow Summer sales" or "the more sharks the better" seems to depend on the particular environment [Sales or habitat]
The two subjects unite on one thread to better illustrate each other........
Off topic? Kalk?

Even Cortez, stays somewhat on topic .
Do you really believe someone can follow a balloon with their eyes if they are "totally Brain Dead".
For those people that understand what might have transpired the night Terri's brain was deprived oxygen ........
the issue is far from black and blue.
Some times what you believe to be true can change with just a little more information......

Now that the autopsy showed no signs of a heart attack or Bulimia. Rightful questions are again being raised which should have been answered prior to the death sentence.
Florida has newly released[ formerly sealed] reports of that odd day which might change your opinion on which individuals should be able to pull the plug , Should someone you love turn up deprived of oxygen.

And Kalk writes;
Even Cortez, stays somewhat on topic
and what topic was that?
My post was to support yours and Mikes right to disagree more passionately...like our illustrious national leaders.
It was not about poor Terry Schiavo.
Steve

ps... Your response would mean actually that I was not on topic. . . or making sense, except in the world that Mike suggests you inhabit.

So how's business this week?

Other than a freshie supplier I've been talking to, driving me to distraction with phone calls, I haven't been driven nuts with solicitations this week, so perhaps things are picking up again?

The slow summer busy winter differential is much larger in the north where summer is short and people enjoy it while they can.

Sharks...
Have been decimated in the Sea of Cortez....
Great Whites ...gasp...are making a serious come back in California....as are tigers in Hawaii.

And lots of places have lots of variables in place but it seems that fisherfolk do em in locally and factory ships take on the rest where ever they do not have to confront the US coast guard, Australias, New Zealands and much of Europes.

If they are making a comeback in Florida...which the rise in attacks suggests....isn't it an interesting item? This summer someone will die in Florida...and their family members will agree w/ Kalk. Jewfish are coming back there! Why not sharks?

Shark Attack Kills 14-Year-Old Girl in Florida
By BILL KACZOR, AP

DESTIN, Fla. (June 26) - A 14-year-old girl died Saturday after a shark attacked her while she and a companion were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle, authorities said.

The teenagers were swimming on boogie boards about 100 yards offshore when they noticed a dark shadow in the water, authorities said. The other swimmer was not injured, Walton County Sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Shank said.

The beach in Destin, Fla., where the teen was killed was closed to swimming after the attack.

Tim Dicus, 54, who had been surfing when he heard a scream from the water, found the girl in the center of a bloody circle of water and said much of her thigh was missing, revealing the bone. The girl's friend had begun swimming toward shore.

''I immediately paddled over and found her floating face down in the center of the blood pool,'' Dicus told The Associated Press. ''And right next to her was the shark, about to come up and attack her again.''

Dicus said he put the girl on his surf board and the shark - which he said appeared to be a bull shark about 8 feet long - went after her hand.

''He just followed us right to the beach,'' Dicus said, adding that he punched the shark on the nose when it tried to attack him. ''He was determined to finish lunch. I hate to put it that way, but that was what he was trying to do.''

Two other swimmers came with a raft and helped tow the girl to shore.

The girl was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Shank said. She was on vacation from Gonzales, La., but her name was not immediately released.

The attack happened near the Camping on the Gulf Holiday Travel Park, about 45 miles east of Pensacola. Swimmers were ordered out of the water along 20 miles of crowded beaches shortly after the attack. It was not immediately clear whether they will be allowed back in Sunday.

Florida averaged more than 30 shark attacks a year from 2000 to 2003,

With an average of 30 attacks a year, you must have been a psychic to predict that one. Its obvioulsy blatant proof there are too many sharks, nevermind the increasing number of tourists in the water each year.

Theres always been a lot of tourists in the water.
There will be more great white deaths as well here in Calif. this year.
But for 20 years there were none!
The marine mammal protection act has saved a lot of prey bio-mass and has therefore insured an increase in apex predators.
Just as is its happening here.....is happening to an extent there.

In the majority of the world however....sharks are in terrible trouble.
Simply pointing out where protections are working in a few places is not to say there is not a global crisis.
Aside from the shark attacks, the grouper attacks on 5 lb snappers will increase also.....as the groupers in Florida rebound.
In Mexico however...where management is semi-sincere and seriously corrupt....
they are being systematically wiped out....allowing garibaldi to increase!
Isn't it simply evidence to show some marine fish management at work given different variables.?

There are different theaters in the world for these things to play out.
Steve
However, its ironic to point out a huge difference in collecting culture in Florida.
Florida ...like Indonesia and the Philippines has a long tradition of drug collecting...whilst Hawaii, Mexico and Australia do not. Hawaiian scientists and collectors learn it the right way and Florida boys are brought up a different way.

For my next 2 predictions.
1.] The "Big ONE" for Calif.

2.] The admission by scientists that Fla has a shark problem .

As much news coverage as the shark attack/florida stuff got last summer, kalk's prediction sure was pure genius...

Next, he'll predict that there will be a gator attack in florida.

Oops,
Shouldn't have mentioned the gators.
As is universally well known...their numbers have increased since protections were implemented and enforced....then, they rebounded like ...well like the sharks.
When their numbers were low....attacks were also ...er...low.
This is in fact a lot like rocket science.
