I am kind of rushing things ... ... ...
LMK what you think of that Geismann bulb compared to the XM.

There is a difference between a noob setting up a tank and dumping stuff in as opposed to the veteran. The veteran will NOT post when all his stuff is dying. :joke:

You are doing a fantastic job with this tank, as expected!

If I don't like what I see in my tank I always reference this thread (I am sure you will recognize it) ... http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/advanced-reefs/17828-coloring-up-sps-2.html

I noticed people ask more about what they can dose for color and growth, instead of cleaning up the massive piles of detritus building up in their sumps.

I forgot about that thread. I miss Shawn's input on this form. He was a wealth of knowledge and he always explained his viewpoints in the simplest of ways, at least to us ;)

Posts like this
Biologically available nutrients would be another factor to added to the equation.

It's a catch22, high specific nutrients with high nutrient removal.

and this

There are many different combinations of equipment and husbandry to lead to the final achievable goal of colorful and rapidly growing SPS.

To sum up success in two words IMO: Phosphate control.

Inorganic phosphate inhibits calcification. Stop calcification and you decrease/stop growth which decreases color.

How you decrease phosphate really doesn't matter, i.e. skimming, water changes, phosphate absorption, etc; as long as you come close to the magic level (Redfield ratio) found in nature.

Exactly!!!

You can see at the end of that thread what I am talking about with the dumping of random chemicals into your tank. I seem to recall someone even posting that no Acropora species are properly colored (whatever that means) unless you are running a Zeovit tank.
This is not to insult anyone using Zeovit by any means. I used to frequent their forum and was curious about the method myself, but to think you are going to dump this stuff into your tank and all of a sudden have the most beautiful tank on the planet ... NOT going to happen.

(I don't consider myself an SPS expert at all ... just learned a lot through trial and error and am still learning.)

wow looks like u and Kasei need to upgrade asap !

lol we were both out of the hobby for a while so we went bananas buying corals at first. I already thinned out the SPS. I really won't be adding any more unless I am replacing something that I no longer want. Good thing for the frag tank!

Thanks! Mike do you like that blue fuzzy coral on the left in the middle? Once it puts a base down I can cut you a frag.

I encountered my first problems with the reef :) My frag tank which i plumbed to my main tank has had some cyano under the eggcrate for a couple weeks. The frag tank had lower flow while the high flow display tank remained cyan and algae free. So the fault was place on lack of flow (waiting for another mp10). Today a few patches of cyano popped up in the display. NO GOOD! :(
I'm usually not one to mess with additives but I decided to use Microbe lift Special Blend. I used this on my old tank with 100% success. I'll take some pics tomorrow to show the cyano now and a few weeks after dosing.

On a positive note all the corals are doing great and growth has been very fast :)

Well special blend really isnt a chemical and you can take a swig of it without getting sick(so i read and wouldnt advise it) so its safe enought to use. I tried it when i had real bad cyano and didnt do much. Only thing that helped me was my beast skimmer. I still get it but no where near as bad as i used to
