thanks everyone!
well, i've been searching and searching for an affordable hippo tang, and all i have been seeing is 70 bucks, 80 bucks....hundreds even....it's been discouraging.
then, a local store that is usually WAY overpriced had a sale.
i noticed that basically what he did was raise his prices, and then cut them back to the sale price, which was the same as the regular price :?

i was rounding the corner of his display tanks, and at the very last one was some super small hippos. i ended up spending 37.09 for a tang not much more than an inch long. he seems healthy enough.
he will stay in the QT tank for a few weeks before i figure out if he will live his young life in the fuge, or main display....

They're pretty cheap around here. But the stores around here don't usually have fish on clearance. :)

Why would you put him in the fuge, though?

he is 1 inch long. i fear 2 things- 1 is my other tangs are mildly aggressive and i think they might hurt the little guy, and 2 is i just lost my mandarin which was bigger than the hippo, to a sally lightfoot crab. i want to wait until he is atleast an inch larger before i throw him to the wolves :?

Cute Little guy you have there X. I saw him at the LFS he looks healthy. Maybe he could be a buddy for your clown down in the Fuge. The Clown can show him how to jump over the baffles from the sump to the fuge and back. Humm maybe not. If he learns that trick, he'll going fly right out the 125 when he gets bigger  Better get a catchers mitt. LOL

i hear ya on that one...
im in lower canada myself (right across the river from detroit) and things arent any cheaper here. My luck is that my fish guy has an eye for cheap cars and they keep on breaking down and since im a licensed tech i get deals from time to time .. my blue hippo is on the larger side (3-4") for $50 Can

For some reason the Hippo tangs are not cheap here in Houston either. Good luck with him.

a little update on the hippo- all he would do in the QT is hide. he ate on the first day, but then that was it. so i threw him in the sump with my percula clown and he suddenly came to life. eating like a pig and swimming around like he felt right at home. i guess he's quite the social creature.
i started thinking he wasn't going to make it for a while there....now, it seems like he's got a good chance.

Fantastic looking tank. Shows what you can do with a bit of imagination.

Can I ask about the rock towers? I see you use wooden dowelling. I wonder if plastic chopsticks would work too, just wondering about the wood rotting.

thanks alot!
well, we have since used acrylic rods for the final tower, because some were concerned about nitrate leaching out of the wood, and also the rotting, but i haven't seen any nitrate issue as of yet, and the wood is still just as strong as the day i put it in.
i have a total of about 3 feet of 1/2 inch wooden dowel in a 180 or so, gallon system. i don't think it will be a problem.
about chopsticks, what kind of wood are they made out of? if it is a real soft wood, like the cheap ones you get for free at the sushi restaurant, i would imagine they wouldn't last long.
we did a search for acrylic/plastic rods on google and went with a clear acrylic---

good luck!

You know, that really puts the photo in perspective. :'8O': I'd thought the dowel was chopstick sized, about 1/4 inch or so.

I was thinking plastic chopsticks, they're pretty common here, but I'll revisit for some larger and stronger plastic rods. Thanks for that idea. ;)

Latest news- I have purchased a Blue Line "Tsunami" wavemaker used(60 dollars shipped), and have added it to the tank. I tried to connect it to my new Hydor Koralia model 4's, but it would seem that the Koralias are not good for wavemakers, due to the fact that they pretty regularly rattle when starting up, so you hear it whenever the current changes :(

So i have the 2 Koralia 4's(1200 gph each) running full time, and the wavemaker toggles on and off 2 MJ1200's. At first i felt it was a bit much, but no one is complaining

- just a quick snap from today..
