I agree with a dollar limit, or as has been suggested different divisions.

Yeah I agree....or we could do a combination of the two. Have an unlimited budget, then according to how much was spent on the tank, it is put into a class of that specific dollar range, and then the best of that class gets voted on. Such as

person A spends 400 dollars.
person B spends 700 dollars.
podman spends 6000 dollars.
person C spends 1000 dollars.
person D spends 100 dollars.

there would be like the 0-500 dollar range. the 500-800 dollar range, and the 1000 dollar + range. winners decided out of those categories.

Ok guys, we HAVE to have some limiting means of livestock. I wont be able to hold a candle to someone with infinite funds to stock a tank, and I have noone and nowhere to get frags other than buying them. I would not stand a chance against someone unless some kind of limit is set. You have to level the playing field a little bit. If we decided on unlimited budgets for livestock, I will still participate, just for the joy of setting up another tank, but I know I will get my ass handed to me by the rich folk.
Idea-
10 gallon tanks only.
whatever equipment you have(or purchase) within a certain acceptable parameter(amount of, and expenditure of equipment has no influence on winning tanks- I've seen some beautiful tanks whose equipemnt was all home built and looked to be held together with bubble gum and bailing wire)

Inhabitants- everything will have a predetermined price(based on average internet retail prices) and have a set amount of money as a ceiling- each contestant has an equal amount of money, and each coral, invert, fish, is deducted from this "bank" regardless of whether the coral was taken from their other tanks, recieved from a frag swap, or purchased from a local LFS.

Example:
use ffexpress/Dr. smith website for creature price listing
$250 limit

I get 4 frags from my display tank(gsp, colt, cup[tubinaria], and devils hand)
according to Dr.Foster/Smith's website the following would be deducted from my "bank":
Devils hand(small) 18.99
Colt(small)24.99
GSP(small)19.99
Cup(small)25.99
-----------------------
89.96

bank=250.00
-89.96
----------------
160.04 left to spend on inhabitants- store bought or else where.

I think only corals, fish, display items should count against the cost. Live Rock, hitchhickers, sand, cleanup crew, etc should not.

What was the point of this, again?

I agree that the money aspect is the most difficult. Even if I figure out my monetary expenses as U.S. funds, it will still cost me more. A Xenia frag here costs a minimum of 19.99 Canadian. A nice, small colony of polyps will cost me 30 bucks PLUS taxes, plus shipping, if I order them online. If I buy locally, could be anything from 29.99 to 59.99 for a colony of decent zoanthids or shrooms. Of course I can frag my own stuff, but I still have to count my frags at full market value.

My idea is this: how about we choose an online retailer, like marinedepotlive.com, and use THEIR prices as our guideline? For example, anyone who adds a peppermint shrimp: $9.00. Same goes for equipment, for example, a 50 watt Pro Heat titanium heater is $24.95.

Does this make sense, or would it be too confusing?

I diasgree. The corals, fish etc etc etc will be in any system.

But live rock, sand, cleanup crews and many other things are optional. If one can save $100 on say Live rock by using something else, yet have the same livestock should one not get credit for that? after all you can make your own rock for instance. And if one does not have to pay for cleanup crews yet has no algae shouldn't one get crdeit for that also?

because live rock and sand would be counted towards equipment(they are after all, the primary source of filtration)
clean up crews... they are livestock- prices gotten from the "list" and deducted from your "bank" YOU determine what goes into your tank- I've seen a tank that has almost NO live rock- about 60 lbs ina 200 gallon tank- the corals have grown so much, and are so big, the only way to remove them would be to frag them, and also break the tanks as well- some of the stony corals have encrusted the glass and formed natural ledges...

Agree using standard cost list. From the (HINT HINT) Sponsor of the contest.

Equipment is hard. What if I use equipment that they don't sell? If we add equipment costs we need to expand the cost $250 would not be enough.

Yup, and hitch hikers shouldn't count because they are inadvertant additions to the tank...no wait let me re-think this...a tank full of aptasia would be easy to do

Kidding!

place basic limits on the equipment- this doesnt have to be state of the art, and I'll wager MOST of us, at least the ones discussing this at the moment, have much of the equipment they would use already sitting in the closets.

Wouldn't the maximum dollar limit on equipment automatically do that? In other words you can't "buy" a Ca reactor and Tunze skimmer and wavemaker and 500w MH pendant and stay under the allowed dollar amount so it limits itself...FWIW

I think he means that you would look up the price for the nearest equivalent to what you have, or cannot find on that site.

I chose MarineDepot because their site covers quite a bit of stuff. Perhaps someone knows of a more comprehensive site better suited to us?

Perhaps a nano site :P

well I actually meant to set the equipment parameters to a basic level- like lights, heaters, circulation pumps, and thats it- most of us have at least those sitting in a closet- not everyone has an extra fuge, CA reactor etc. sitting around...
