Are you trying to grow SPS in the shadows? Thats alot of wattage.
Yes, what are you using for light?

Two VHO ballast running at 440 wats a piece, thus that is 8 VHO bulbs each 110 watts a piece, which equals 880 watts of VHO.

Two 400 watt metal halide ballast and two bulbs running at 400 watts, which equals 800 watts.

Add them all together, 800 watts + 880 watts = 1680 watts

I am going to put mostly blues on the VHO bulbs. I might only have one white out of all 8 VHO bulbs. I might go up to two whites. The actinics really color the corals up. Plus I like the look of blue.

I would go with 250 watt MH, but I believe they are almost just as hot as a 400, so why go with a 250 that produces less light as a 400 and the same heat as a 400.

The people that I have seen growing corals under them locally around my LFS, have amazing results with the 10KK Reeflux 400's. Every coral that they put into there tank turns blue and the polyp expansion is unreal.

They even complain about it. They want a purple coral to stay purple, but it just turns blue! I gave one of my friends a purple monitpora that was pretty much brown, and in a week and a half, the damn thing turn baby blue. It blew my mind.

It will be a SPS dominate tank.

Wow, 10,000K MHs and 7 blue 110W tubes is a WAY too blue for me. You must REALLY like blue! :D Space for the lights is going to be a little tight too, considering you probably need about 16" of width just for the VHO tubes. When you have it up, show us some pictures though.

Good luck.

I believe it is a 45 gallon. I am pretty sure that it is 36X18X24.

Its a really good sump. I love it. Go check them out at Coral Connection on Delware Street in Kenner.

I will. I appreciate you directing me tho this thread when you and I were talking at Coral Connection yesterday. I'm Kevin. We talked about the oceans motions. I talked to Paul at oceans motions and he said you shouldn't be having that problem with the 1750gph. He said for you to call him and ya'll could work it out. Also, where would I be able to find a
rubber mat like the one that your dad got for you to put in your stand underneath your sump and your pumps? I want one.

I am debating if that is working or not. There been some problems in the past with it. If you get a leak it gets under the mat. The water could damage the wood.

You might be better off with just mouse pads. I will talk to my dad for you.

Cool, thanks! I am going to call Paul.

What about those rubber pads you see at restaurants in the kitchens that have holes in them. That might be a better option. Oh well, talk to your dad. I'm not looking for any freebees, I just want to find something that I can buy for vibration/noise dampening.

Also, I talked to my brother-in-law who works for a food service company. He says he sells the mats that go in restaurants and will look into getting me one. I will let you know.

I agree with Wazzel. I had those thoughts before.

The food mat would be a better idea. Such as, the ones that have small inch sized holes that are really spongey feeling. I like those. You see them in large kitchens.

They are really thick though. You should have it in your stand while your doing your plumbing. The thickness can through off your plumbing when you are doing your pump's return and intake. So you need it under your sump when you are working on your plumbing.

Oh yeah, I called Paul of OceansMotions and he gave me a tip to get that knocking sound to go away. It is diffently plumbing hammer. So much pressure flows through them and when the hole is cut off it makes a knock noise and will do that each time a hole is closed off.

So I am going to cut a small notch out of the drum on both sides to let water in the holes at all times, just a small notch like less than 1/4th of an inch. It still will do alot of surging action, but it will have a tiny little flow out of the closed ones.

So it really isnt the GPH of the pump. It is the pressure exerted by the pump that is making this happen. It can handle a larger pump than mine easily. Just a small modification will help it.

So I am going to do that today.

I use the same system with the Hammerhead pump also, and found that it's important to keep the returns as close to the OM as possible and of the same length.
