Sciguy you are really using the wrong terminolgy. DOA means dead upon arrival. How could you get a DOA when you pick it up at the B+M yourself?

Not any more with the new foods out on the market! You should know that Gresh!

Yah, but not all wholesalers have a feeding program like you Eric :D The feeds on the market are great, and soon we'll have even more to choose from

Naw, I can't remember much about the CoC threads. They are drowned out in my recollection by the MAC and cyanide threads.

Huh, and here I thought all along you were a smart guy that could follow such easy threads  Is it age catching up to you? :D

Why certainly age is catching up with me, my young friend. There are some upsides of getting older though - perhaps with age you will start to catch sarcasm, for instance.

...And before you say it Gresh; yeah, I really should get out of the lab more.

Lee,
You forgot to explain how people buy fish and then go shopping elsewhere. Often leaving the fish in the hot sun for extended periods, despite warnings not to from the lfs. I've had people kill some of the healthiest fish in the world and bring back the body demanding another. There are a lot of idiots and crooks out there. It's let the retailer beware with some of them.

Yeah, all the sun and humidity in the green house can mess up a person's mind I've been told.

Take it easy (and with a grain of salt), Gresh.

The sad part is the fish could have been picked up and brought back into the store and still would have lived a happy long life.

Lets see, you walk out of the store with the fish living, so what is your point?

STR

It's just an apples to apples consideration, STR. For a true comparison of DOAs for etail vs. B&M one should have a common end point, the hobbyist aquarium. I was assuming that the short hop from B&M to hobbyist aquarium should be a low risk affair. However, the B&M folks are telling me that it isn't, and that is part of the reason why they don't offer guarantees.

So, for arguments sake, who would you say is rougher, on average, in getting the fish home? The consumer taking it from B&M to home, or the FedEx driver delivering for etailer? :?:

If a fish can not survive the trip from a LFS to a hobbyist's home, it wasn't fit to be sold in the first place. Of course, extreme circumstances like dropping the fish in a the parking lot, are the exception, not the norm.

"and the lowly B&M can't even get reimbursed for the DOAs they get from the wholesaler."

Sounds like DOA to me not DIT or DAA

The problem is the hobbyist that takes their fish home, and with no acclimation drops it into a tank at 1.029 SG, 7.24 pH, and 68 degrees. Then complains to the B&M that their fish died.

This sort of thing happens every day.

DIT - I just made that one up Patrick, it's not a used acronym :D

And again, another generalization. I watched a local B & M acclimate a shipment of fish, coral, and inverts--float for temp, cut the bags and dump them right on in to the tank. Of course I know not all acclimate this way though.

Patrick-

It sounds that way to me as well. Many wholesalers I know expect the retailer to absord the first 2%-5% of the DOA rate, and will only give credit on DOA rates above the magical cutoff point.

That is not fair in the slightest. The common endpoint is when a change of custody has occurred. Once the livestock is received.

Using your thought process you could buy a fish and leave it in the car overnight and then bring it back to the store dead, still in the bag. Is this what you consider DOA?

The topic I was addressing was related to guarantees to customers, STR. Presumably an etail customer could leave the animals outside overnight as well. If such foolishness is considered when coming up with a <1% DOA for the etailer I guess it should be included when calculating the DOA from B&Ms.
