What caused the first end cap to melt? If you fixed the problem then it should be no problem to splice a new end on it.

I use a old Ehiem canister filter as a pump for my sump. I just take out everything out of the cannister. I bought mine used at a LFS for $25. Sometimes you can get some good deals on used equipment from them.
